U.S. Embassy Ouagadougou statement regarding the change in leadership in Burkina Faso
3 MINUTE READ
October 6, 2022

The United States has followed events over the last week in Burkina Faso with concern. We condemn violence and transfers of power by unconstitutional means. We call on all parties to exercise restraint and to resolve differences calmly and peacefully.

We welcome reports that Captain Ibrahim Traoré intends to adhere to the transition schedule agreed to with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in July 2022 to return to a democratically elected, civilian-led government in Burkina Faso. The cooperative work by religious and traditional leaders to avoid further bloodshed shows the strength and resilience of the social fabric in Burkina Faso, even during this difficult time.

The United States stands with the people of Burkina Faso to work towards peace, stability, and democracy.
