The U. S. Embassy Ouagadougou welcomed a group of 28 university students and young professionals to its Information Resource Center (IRC) for the October English Club.  This month’s discussion and activities were led by English Program Specialist Lynn Hanson Ouédraogo and focused on volunteering and the benefits of volunteering.  The audience discussed their own experiences of volunteering and the impact on others and themselves.  Then students did various listening, comprehension, and analytical exercises based on an article explaining how volunteering has benefits for one’s own health.  Finally, the audience worked in small groups to identify problems in their schools, workplaces, and city that could be addressed through voluntary efforts and how they could personally be involved.  Monthly English Clubs at the U. S. Embassy promote English language learning.  They provide audiences a framework within which to improve their English proficiency by engaging in dynamic discussion on pertinent topics of shared interest.
