Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (16 March 2020)

Location:  Burkina Faso

Event:  There is an ongoing outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) first identified in Wuhan, China.  The global public health threat posed by COVID-19 is high, with more than 100,000 reported cases worldwide.

On March 16, 2020, the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health announced 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19: 14 in Ouagadougou, and one in Hounde.

The Government of Burkina Faso has implemented the following:

  • All passengers arriving from, or who transited through, countries designated Level 3 or 4 by the World Health Organization are asked to self-isolate for a period of 14 days.
  • Screenings at airports including hand sanitizer and temperature control.
  • Schools are closed until March 31.
  • Gatherings of more than 50 are banned.

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy continues to provide routine services for American Citizens.  If you are sick or feel ill, no matter how slightly, please re-schedule your appointment.

Actions to Take:

  • Call the Burkina Faso hotline at (226) 52-19-53-94 or (226) 70-95-93-27 if you feel ill and suspect you might have COVID-19.
  • Consult the CDC website for the most up-to-date information.

  • Visit the COVID-19 crisis page on travel.state.gov for the latest information.
  • Check with your airlines regarding any updated information about your travel plans and/or restrictions.
