Great Success with Geography Club by Volunteer Max Miller

group shotIn 2014, Geography Club has been a huge success for Max. Taking place on Thursdays and Saturdays and engaging 20 CM1 (5th grade) girls and boys, Geography Club focuses on practicing using maps, learning world geography, and becoming familiar with Burkina Faso. The club has four maps of Burkina Faso, and students are learning all about scales, what different colors mean (yes, all the blue is, in fact, water!), and the significance of symbols. They will break into groups and work together to answer questions such as, “What’s the distance between point A and point B?”, “Is there a hospital in this town?”, etc. Another fun activity and great opportunity to apply their new skills and knowledge was drawing a map of their village, taking into consideration what symbols they should use and what the scale should be.
