Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Ouagadougou (June 30, 2023)

Location: Ouagadougou, Additional Cities 

Event: Rallies on July 1, 2023 

Rallies in support of the Transition Authority have been reported for Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Place de la Nation and surrounding areas in downtown Ouagadougou. The demonstrations are scheduled to start at 8:00 AM. No scheduled end time has been announced.  

Similar rallies are planned the same day and time in the following cities: Bobo Dioulasso (Place de la Tiefo Amoro); Banfora(Place de la Nation); Koudougou; Gaoua (Place de la Revolution); Tenkodogo (Place de la Nation); Manga (Place de laNation); Ouahigouya (Place de la Nation); Koupela; Po; Fada N’gourma (Place de la Nation); Kaya (Place de la Nation);Cinkanse; Kampti; Nianyologo (Place de la Nation).

Expect roadblocks or large groups of demonstrators in downtown Ouagadougou and other noted areas. Demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid taking photographs or videos of demonstrations as this may attract attention and antagonize the crowd.  

Actions to Take: 

  • Avoid the demonstration area. 
  • Avoid all crowds and gatherings. 
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. 
  • Monitor local media for updates. 
  • Keep a low profile.  
  • Travel in groups if possible.
