On February 20, 2014 the U. S. Embassy Ouagadougou welcomed a group of about 20 high school and university students into its American Library for the monthly English Club. This month’s discussion and activities were led by English Program Specialist Lynn Hanson Ouédraogo and were focused on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech. Students discussed the six dreams that Dr. King expounded on in his speech and identified the various actions that he as well as others in the American civil rights movement took to actually achieve these dreams. Then students were led through activities to identify their own personal dreams. Individually and in small groups they began to articulate action plans for achieving these dreams. Monthly English Clubs at the U. S. Embassy promote English language learning. They provide audiences a framework within which to improve their English proficiency by engaging in dynamic discussion on pertinent topics of shared interest.
